Hi everyone, I'm Mark Wright at Heart Radio and today we are speaking with Belle Hughes and Téo Sinclair, who are starring in Netflix's new film, Rebecca. how are you guys doing?

Oh yes, hi, hi everybody! I'm alright then, filming in nice, damp Ireland which I have been informed recently by a certain someone that it is not the Caribbean, so who am I to complain about the weather?

Geography is important, Ari. I mean, Belle. Hi, thank you for having us. And, I'm doing well, in the south of Italy so it's not as cold as Ireland I'm afraid.

Don't you wish we were in the Caribbean, Téo? Or is the south of Italy treating you good?

I thought we were keeping our romance a secret? I'm joking. I'm joking. This is going to backfire nicely but Italy is treating me very well, thank you for asking.

[bursts out laughing] What's a secret anymore??

You're not helping our case. Anyway, let's get this started.

Nothing else to say about that, guys??

Nothing at all, carry on!!

[shakes head, rolling his eyes]

Alright, alright [laughs] Rebecca is an adaption of Daphne Du Maurier's novel, but also a remake of Hitchcock's film. Were you familiar with the original material or the previous film before you worked on the film?

I had read the novel, yes, it's very striking considering the way it's written- there is still a lot of mystery and unanswered questions even within the book itself, like my character's name which I love. I brought it with me on set, listened to it often, but I'm not one to really bog myself down with too much words... I want influence and inspiration, not a total structure for me to step into, yeah? And oh no no... I didn't watch Hitchcock's film, but I might now that it's over...

I have read the book, forever ago. after I've watched the Hitchcock's version actually. So I was already familiar with the story and characters before we started to work on it ourselves, and I did read the novel again but I didn't want to watch the famous movie since I didn't want to be influenced and, it does derive from the original source which I think is what made its strength, among other things. But I agree with Belle, my beloved co-star here. I always found it interesting that we never quite know anything about the narrator herself. No name, she is known as Mrs De Winter and her backstory is a bit of a mystery. She is not a person, she has no real identity, no real personality. I always found that to be frustrating when I read the book.

You think it was frustrating reading it? Try envisioning the script. You know, I was even worried with the costuming because she's such a blank canvas in some regards and I kept double guessing- would she be really walking around in Chanel, of all things? What would this women do? She's a literal mystery and that's the attraction itself, yeah?

You're right about her being a blank canvas. And I do believe that is her appeal, to make her entire existence a complete opposite from the person that was Rebecca. She's a woman who has managed to leave a haunting shadow after her death, captivating to the point of creating an obsession within others. And I don't think that's the case of your Mrs De Winter. I wouldn't say she's forgettable but she definitely doesn't stand out.

That is kind of what I wanted to do- she certainly has a sense of power when she comes out of the end of this, some iron and mettle, but I don't think she's meant to be this shining diamond that is brighter than the last wife. I wanted to give her some dimension and some breath and kind of fill her out myself.

I mean, what you and Ben did for this film is a new approach to the character from the original story. I think you succeeded on giving her a bigger personality as the story unfolded.

Ben is really fantastic at that kind of stuff. Now- you play a newlywed couple, who have to deal with the omnipresence of Rebecca, the previous and deceased wife of Maxim. How did that work for the film?

The way I see it: you have this couple, each person coming with their own trauma, who truly do not know anything about one another but they are finding what they need in each other. He has found a young, innocent person that is giving him a sense of hope, the opposite of what he had know until then. And she sees him as this way out of this life that is pulling her down. Neither of them is truly living until they meet each other. So the film begins with this glimmer of hope, this positive light shining over our characters but as the story progresses, it's clear that those dreams of a new and more positive life are shattered by the darkness of a ghost inviting herself into their marriage. they're a paranormal throuple? That's how I would sum up the story.

Paranormal throuple, utterly brilliant. It is now!! I mean, the thing here is- you're not going to see Rebecca. You're not even going to ever see a flashback of her. She's not casted, the only thing she is, really, anymore is a memory and yet, she lives in between these people so strongly she almost manifests herself. It very much becomes you, me, and her. Total throuple.

Paranormal Throuple, it's a new quarantine thing. So it really becomes all a part of the mystery of Rebecca even when you figure out all the answers?

Yes! I think that's what really makes this film and novel so great through out the years. You can't deny yourself that curiosity of what happened to this woman, who is she, what did she mean, what does she look like- it's like trying to look away from an accident but without ever seeing what exactly happened.

You really try to understand who she was as it unfolds, and even the interactions our narrator has through the story doesn't give it away until the final climax. And, when you think about it, this is what they have in common: the mystery surrounding these two women.

Now let's talk about Maxim for a moment. Téo, how are you faring holding up comparing your role to the late, great Laurence Olivier?

I really, really, really am not trying to compare myself to Laurence Olivier and no one should. Otherwise, you are in for some great disappointment. He's a legend. But, that's also why I decided not to watch the movie before we began. I didn't want to be influenced, I didn't want to end up copying his performance either. I just tried to make this my own. And we were also playing different versions of Maxim, which helped me removing myself from the possible and inevitable comparison.

He's fantastic, you'll see. He gives Maxim this dimension that I feel like is left out of the original material and it's so great. But really.... how can anyone compare themselves to Laurence Olivier when there are literally awards named after him.

Now let's talk about Maxim for a moment. Téo, how are you faring holding up comparing your role to the late, great Laurence Olivier?

Do you think they will name an award after Téo Sinclair? Be honest.

What would it be for? How good your french accent is??

I'm done with you today.

[laughs]

[laughs again] Now Belle, when the Mrs De Winter first enters Maxim's world she finds herself very captivated by everything around her, so much grandeur in everything that's going on- did you feel like that yourself walking onto this set or any set you come on now? What about you, Téo?

I feel like that walking into almost any set, certainly- even the digital ones, which always feel like some big obstacle course like Tomb Raider. There is just something about having the tools of your environment adding to your character that really makes your job spectacular like standing in the halls of Manderley- so impressive. I did love that we traveled proper for this one too.

Ah Tomb Raider. I agree with you though, there is always a new dimension added to the work of storytelling we are doing when you walk into a set that is trying to be as real and natural as possible. Which is what I loved about working with Ben. He was trying to be as authentic as possible about our surroundings. He did great work showing the opposition between the full of light and carefree spirit of Monte Carlo against the more dark, rough and heavy Manderley. And some sets really becoming another character in itself, not just a background but something you have to work with. And I always enjoyed when filming gave me this experience.

And with that in mind- at the beginning of the film, our couple meets in Monte Carlo, and you shot on location? how was that experience?

Gorgeous. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. We were in Devon at Hartland Quay at the harbor for awhile and oh my goodness. But also, sincerely lucky neither one of us rolled off a cliff?

I just want to say we are lucky because it almost happened a few times over. When we shot those scenes in Monte Carlo, when they were driving around? It's gorgeous, sure, but it's not exactly safe

For example- when we went hiking and Téo nearly ripped his foot off.

Can I just point out, and remind you, how it had been raining the way it does in Devon and the trail was slippery?

[whispers into the camera] It wasn't even raining THAT hard. He's just embarrassed. I carried him the rest of the way on my back like a strong, powerful woman. [tries to say this with the straightest face possible]

There are so many lies in that sentence, I don't even know where to begin. I just want it to be clear, Belle is not chivalrous; unless you count laughing at someone's near death experience.

[finally breaks her composure and laughs]

[sighs] She's a great person to work with as you can tell.

So I know you two have particular ways in becoming a character, especially you Teo- in what ways have you two inhabited these characters and made them your own considering how much material there is to work with?

I don't know how to answer this without giving the entire plot away... even if not it does sound as if I have engaged in illegal activities and have a dark secret. Which I don't. Belle, how did you become Mrs De Winter? Would you say being so isolated and lost in the natural decor helped us?

Oh well, oops, I already gave some of it away. I was a bit lucky and had more lee way into how I wanted to go about playing Mrs De Winter. It's rough though because you really have to get into your feelings at the end, really have to over think so much at that point in your life because that's also the point of her life. It was honestly bleak for a moment because you really start to second guess everything, but it works for this film. Also is this a shaming me for getting us lost that one time?

You're spoiling the entire story left and right. No, I am shaming you for losing my compass which, in turn, really screwed us over. We had fun on set, really.

We found our way back eventually!!! And I bought you a really great compass when I got back!! Do you still use it?

Because of me, not you. I'm not arguing over this again. I always keep my compass with me. [looks around] It's somewhere around here.

Now these might be clashing opinions but- do you find Rebecca to be a love story, a thriller, or a horror film?

Can I say it's a morally twisted love story???

You really think there is love in that story? Because I always found it to be a story about obsession, perception. Probably closer to a thriller. Mrs. Danvers is a perfect horror villain though.

Yes, I do!! They end up together in the end, don't they?? I mean, in the end, it's fucked up- but it's love, yeah?? They find some sort of peace together. Murder might be involved, but it's all fine. I love Mrs.Danvers.

It's all fine because they love each other. So love excuses murder...? The things we are learning about you today. She was pure evil. She is pure evil. And let's please take a moment to praise Kristin who was just perfect in the role? Thank you

Well, the Mrs. surely excused it [laughs a little] Kristin is just utterly brilliant in that role, but the best thing is, I think, she was probably the sweetest on set? We're both terrible, but she was an angel

How is that making it any better!? Would you excuse murder in the name of love? I do wish we knew more about Mrs. Danvers. I really dislike her character but she was also, fascinating to me. And Kristin played this perfectly.

She truly is fantastic, I tried to get her on this call, but she ended up being busy! Do you think it's a fair comparison to the status of social media nowadays? How we are given glimpses of information, never the big picture, and how we let it affect us and our imagination?

I mean... I think Rebecca itself is certainly a modern tale if you look at it this way. Spending too much time on the computer, watching how other people live based only what's given, yeah? Could be dangerous to just let your imagination wander because you start to lose track of what's real and what's not.

For a second I thought you were talking about Rebecca being on the computer... did you work on a different version when i was looking away? But back to the topic. I can see how the comparison is made, what we know or believe we know, what we perceive does not always equal the reality but, I also think it's a stretch considering when this story was written. But it does show how humanity always let its imagination fill the gaps and create an alternate version of the truth that can be damaging.

Yes, that's exactly it! It's assumptions that can be damaging, you can see that now a days with how people socialize on the internet and you can see it back in the days this was written and how gossip can twist anything around. Rebecca didn't need a computer, okay.

Rebecca is the malware taking over the computer until it crashes down.

Rebecca is that prince from another country who wants to marry you once you wire them 50k.

Sounds like someone is speaking from experience... [raises eyebrow]

CMBYN's hunky Téo Sinclair forms "a close relationship" with Rebecca co-star Belle Hughes who, oh yeah, used to date his other co-star, Alex Goodhall???

The former Little Women co-stars met last year but bonded even more on set in Devon for their latest Netflix film, Rebecca. We've been seeing frequent candids of them lately in costume, but many of them show the couple going out to dinner and partaking in frequent hikes together... and now sources say there might just be more to it than that.

Belle Hughes has been off and on with Hollywood's new fav, Alex Goodhall, and the rumors are that they were off again despite reconciling back in Spring according to these candids in March. Sources also say that Téo is providing a consoling shoulder for Hughes which just shows she knows how to manipulate people a lot more talented than her.
